Is there a national online-prescribing rule?
As of September 2026, states set different standards for remote prescribing; federal drug rules apply as well.
Remote prescribing means a health professional orders medicine after care at a distance.
How different can the rules be?
As of September 2026, Idaho forbids using only a fixed-question online form as the basis for treatment.
California allows a questionnaire to count as the examination before prescribing, but only if the care meets the required medical standard. Completing a form does not automatically meet that rule.
Ask how the doctor will decide whether your answers are enough or whether you need more questions, tests or an in-person exam.
Those examples explain why an answer about one state cannot settle the answer for another.
What if I travel or move?
Before the next visit, give the service the state where you will sit. Ask how it checks permission to treat you there.
As of September 2026, some states allow special telehealth registration instead of a full state licence, with conditions.
The relevant state board is the place to check that permission.
